All donated food will go to the San Diego Food Bank\, where it will be distributed to those who are in need. Furthermore\, new toys packaged in their original container will be accepted. These will go to children who are unable to experience the joy of opening a new toy on Christmas morning.\n\nNow more than ever it is important to donate and support the community due to the devastation caused by COVID-19. With your help\, we can ensure a happy and healthy holiday season for all who have felt the pain of loss and isolation. Bahrami unless otherwise noted. \n\n\nThe Music\nThe “Middle East” is a fairly recent name for a vast geographical region with a long shared history\, stretching from perhaps Afghanistan in the East\, across the Mediterranean\, and North Africa\, almost to Spain in the West. It’s history – and hence it’s music – is defined by the three big empires: Persian\, Arabian\, and Ottoman\, each dominating a huge area for hundreds of years.\nEven so\, many many other nations\, notably the Kurds\, Armenians\, Greeks\, Chaldeans\, Assyrians\, and others contributed to the rich culture and music of the Middle East (ME). So\, maybe it’s more accurate to speak of the many musics of the ME\, rather than Middle Eastern music.\nSome general characteristics of Middle Eastern musics include the use of so-called “quarter tones” (absent from the piano and guitar)\, ample improvisation\, and a traditional way of teaching heart-to-heart. Additionally\, Middle Eastern musics share a tonal concept called maqâm\, somewhat similar to Western scales. Persian music additionally uses a system called dastgâh\, which provides a framework for navigating between maqâms.\nJazz is an African-American art form from the 20th century. The development of jazz includes roots in the folk musics of the South with influences from Latin and European musics\, through mainstream acceptance as a dance music prior to World War II\, to a more abstract improvisational form of expression in the last half-century.\nGrossmont College world music instructor Farhad Bahrami – with help from veterans of the San Diego jazz and Latin scene: Omar López\, Fernando Gomez\, and Louis Valenzuela – re-imagines Persian classical and folk melodies within the group framework of jazz\, as an example of the possibilities inherent in world musics.

DESCRIPTION:Food Drive: August 3rd\, 2020 10 am- 2 pm\nIn order to help out some families in need\, we will be hosting a food drive on August 3rd. We would appreciate any contributions that you can provide. Stop by the PCC office from 10 am-2 pm to drop off your items\, preferably canned goods and any other nonperishable items. Out of respect for the volunteers who will be there to collect the items\, we would greatly appreciate it if you would wear a mask or face covering for their safety. We’re very grateful for anything you can offer\, and we hope to see you then.  \nThank you\,\nPersian Cultural Center Youth committee \nکمیته نوجوانان کانون فرهنگی ایرانیان، اقدام به جمع آوری مواد خوراکی شامل غذاهای بسته بندی و قوطی برای کمک به خانواده های نیازمند کرده است. برای رسیدن به این هدف، نیاز به کمک و همیاری شما عزیزان داریم. در تاریخ سوم آگوست از ساعت ۱۰ صبح تا ۲ بعد از ظهر، گروهی از نوجوانان در مرکز ایرانیان منتظر شما و کمک های غذایی شما هستند. لطفا ماسک خود را فراموش نکنید. پیشاپیش از همه شما و کمک هایتان نهایت تشکر را داریم.2
